About Dr. Javier Abrego
As the superintendent of Adams 14 School District, Dr. Abrego (or as many refer to him, “Dr. J”) oversees all district daily operations and programs, guided by policies set by the board of education. Dr. Abrego brings to Adams 14, a wide range of experiences and educational expertise.
He’s served as an Arizona superintendent for eight years and has 30 years of experience from the School City of East Chicago as a teacher, high school principal, elementary principal and director of elementary education.
As superintendent in the Morenci Unified School District in Arizona, Dr. Abrego was credited with moving the district’s high school from rated as a “D” by the state, to a “B” in just his first year as superintendent. The following year, the high school moved to an “A” rating and its elementary school also earned an “A” rating.
Continuing to hone his own skills, Dr. Abrego keeps up with the latest trends and research on leadership and continuous improvement. He’s received extensive training in school improvement through the Indiana Principals’ Leadership Academy, Arizona Professional Development Leadership Academy, Harvard Institute of Education Management and the Beyond Textbooks (BT) Curriculum Framework and the System for Teacher and Student Advancement (TAP).
Knowing it’s important to be active in professional and community organizations, Dr. Abrego is a member of the Colorado Association of School Executive, the American Association of School Administrators, Rotary International, the Colorado Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents, the American Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
Dr. Abrego earned all of his higher education degrees from Indiana State University. He earned his bachelors of arts in Spanish, an Educational Specialist degree in curriculum and instruction, a masters of science in secondary administration and supervision, another masters of science in Spanish and physical education and a Ph.D. in educational leadership.
A former marathon runner and coach, Dr. Abrego now spends as much free time as possible along the rivers, lakes and creeks in Colorado – fishing.
